Men’s tennis downed by Ducks, 5-4, in season opener

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College men's tennis team fell to visiting Stevens Institute of Technology, 5-4, in its season opener Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field House.

Haverford (1-0) fell behind as Stevens (1-0) took doubles points at the Nos. 1 and 2 positions, but the Fords got an 8-5 victory from Will Garrett and Hailiu Yang at No. 3.

The Ducks sealed up the win with straight set victories at the top-three singles spots. Haverford received solid play from the bottom of its order. Natty Sergey and Garrett won in straight sets at Nos. 4 and 6, respectively. At No. 5 Matt Romei picked up his first collegiate dual match win in three sets.

The Fords travel to California for their spring break trip, playing three matches in five days. The trip opens up at 20th-ranked Pomona-Pitzer Colleges Tuesday at 6 p.m. PST.
