Men's tennis falls in season opener

HAVERFORD, Pa. -  Senior Andy Dougherty accounted for two points on the day but the Haverford College men's tennis team fell 6-3 in its season opener to visiting Stevens Institute of Technology in non-conference action at the Gary Lutnick Tennis & Track Center in Alumni Field House on Wednesday.

Dougherty combined with classmate Devin Van Dyke to earn the Fords' first point of the day with an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles. Stevens (2-3) managed to pull out victories in the other doubles matches but not without a battle especially at the No. 1 spot where Luis Acaba and Sloan Millman fell 8-6.

Despite its best efforts, Haverford (0-1) came up short in its attempt to rally as the Ducks captured wins at four of the six singles spots. Dougherty tallied one of the Fords' points during singles with a determined effort at No. 4 as he shook off a set-two loss and powered past Antonio Perich (6-0, 1-6, 6-1). Senior Robert Homan also claimed a victory at the No. 5 spot by sweeping past Brett Derrington (7-5, 6-0).

Haverford will return to action on March 10 as it takes on Wabash College in Puerto Rico during spring break.
