Fords remain perfect in conference with sweep of Red Devils

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College men's tennis team remained undefeated in Centennial Conference play after controlling Saturday's match against Dickinson College, 9-0, in the Alumni Field House.

Strong winds in the region forced play indoors and Haverford (7-3, 4-0 CC) jumped out to an early lead in the comfort of their own field house. The Fords outscored Dickinson (3-6, 1-2) 24-9 in doubles play. The top team of Luis Acaba and Jacob Youse had the home squad's largest margin of victory in doubles, winning 8-2 over the Red Devils' top team.

Haverford won 8-3 in the third-flight doubles match behind the tandem of Andy Dougherty and Devin Van Dyke. Sloan Millman and Matt Romei needed 12 games to win their set, dispatching of Dickinson's second-ranked squad, 8-4.

The momentum carried over into singles play for Haverford. The Fords won each of the first four singles bouts in straight sets. Acaba topped the Red Devils Ari Blask (6-1, 6-2) in the No. 1 singles match, while Romei and Youse both won their singles matches 6-2, 6-3, playing in the No. 2 and No. 3 singles spots, respectively. Dougherty won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4 singles and John Cummings handled Josh Kaseff at No. 5 (6-4, 7-6 (7-4)).

Eliot Faust played in the closest match of the day. The freshman won the first set 6-2, but dropped the second 2-6 to Dickinson's John Kneisley at No. 6 singles. Faust rallied in the third set super tiebreaker, winning 10-4, and capturing Haverford's ninth team point on the day.

The Fords remain in Centennial play for their next match on Tuesday, April 8. Haverford will travel to Muhlenberg College to square off with the Mules. First serve is slated for 5 p.m.
