Fords top USciences, win fifth straight match

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College men's tennis team won its fifth straight match on Thursday afternoon as the host Fords topped the University of the Sciences, 6-3, in a non-conference meeting at the Norman B. Bramall Tennis Courts.

Playing outdoors for the first time this spring, the Fords began the day with two wins in doubles action. Luis Acaba and Jacob Youse won 8-6 at No. 2 doubles, while Andy Dougherty teamed up with Devin Van Dyke to take No. 3 doubles by an 8-5 score.

Haverford (9-3) fell short in the top doubles match by three games. Sloan Millman and Matt Romei traded points in the early portion of the set, but USciences' Jake Sosonkin and David Kazakevich opened the match up late and finished with an 8-5 victory.

Romei regrouped, though, and won his No. 3 singles match (6-2, retired). The captain has now won five straight singles matches without dropping a set.

A duel at No. 1 singles saw Acaba narrowly defeat Sosonkin (7-5, 7-5). Dougherty had the quickest match of the afternoon, as the senior rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win at fifth singles. Youse (6-2, 6-4) handled William Metz at fourth singles to earn his third individual win this year.

USciences (6-5) picked up two points with wins at No. 2 and No. 6 singles.

The Fords will host Johns Hopkins University this Saturday, April 12, in a battle of Centennial Conference unbeatens. Haverford (5-0 CC) and the Blue Jays (4-0) join Swarthmore College (3-0) as the only undefeated teams in the league thus far. The winner of Saturday's meeting will move into sole possession of first place in the conference standings. First serve is scheduled for 10 a.m.
