Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Release
HAVERFORD, Pa. – Josh Moskovitz and David Kong, the two players who made up the Haverford College men's tennis No. 1 doubles team this spring, have each been voted to the 2017-18 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area men's tennis team. The all-area team is voted on by the sports information offices of the 29 area institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area.
In order to be eligible for academic all-area honors, an athlete must be in at least his or her second year at the institution and hold a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better. Haverford was the only school in the Philadelphia area with more than one student-athlete named to the academic all-area team.
Playing together at No. 1 doubles, Moskovitz and Kong were both selected as first-team All-Centennial Conference doubles performers this spring. Haverford's top duo went 9-5 this spring, including a 6-1 record against Centennial Conference competition. That success carried Moskovitz and Kong to the No. 12 ranking in the ITA's Atlantic South Region at the conclusion of the season.
Moskovitz, earning academic all-area honors for the second straight season, also earned first-team All-CC recognition in singles as the No. 1 player in the Fords' lineup. Named Centennial Conference Player of the Week three times this spring, Moskovitz posted a 10-7 record in singles, featuring a 6-1 conference mark. He was ranked 12th in the Atlantic South singles release at the end of the season. He has now been named All-Centennial Conference for both singles and doubles during each of his first three seasons with the Fords, garnering three combined first-team selections.
Kong added a team-best 16-3 record in singles, sporting a 6-2 record in Centennial Conference matchups. Moving up to No. 4 in the singles lineup at the end of the season, Kong was named the conference's player of the week on one occasion and was additionally named to the all-sportsmanship team. He started the spring off with 11 straight singles victories before falling in a decisive third set. Kong has now garnered three All-Centennial Conference accolades during his first two years with the Fords.
Men's tennis advanced to the Centennial Conference Tournament for the 12th time in the last 13 seasons after winning 11 matches during the regular season. The Fords placed third in the Centennial Conference's regular season standings with a 7-2 record. The team's only defeats this spring came at the hands of nationally-ranked opponents.
