Men's Tennis Clashes With NYU to Wrap Up Haverford/Swarthmore Invitational

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College men's tennis team played its third match in as many days to wrap up the Haverford/Swarthmore Invitational Sunday inside Alumni Field House, going toe-to-toe with NYU in a lineup of exciting competition against a familiar foe. 

Haverford won two of four doubles matches, with the Fords earning their victories from the pairing of Stefan Johnson and Marko Arboleda, as strong play from the team eclipsed Boren Zheng and Alexander Lee, 8-6, and also from Niki Lavu and Maxfield Ma, who got the best of Rhonak Kara and Haidyn Green in an 8-5 final. 

Moving into singles competition, Haverford won four of eight total matches from the Violets. 

Johnson faced off against Zheng in a nail-biting contest that ended 4-6, 7-5, 10-8 in favor of Johnson. Arboleda battled it out with Jingyuan Chen, with the Haverford rookie securing a comeback victory at 3-6, 6-3, 10-5. Andreas Wingert also emerged victorious against Rumaish Khastgir in straight sets, with a score of 6-3, 7-6(1).

Aiden Kim engaged in a closely contested match with Zachary Freier that saw Kim turning the tide after dropping the first set, ultimately winning in the superbreaker, 2-6, 6-3, 10-7. 

Louis Frowein bested Justin Minerva iin straight sets, finishing things at 6-2, 6-4. Max O'Malley had a comeback win against James McKenzie, 1-6, 6-2, 10-7. In additional matches played as pro sets, Devan Sabapathy and David Green secured comfortable victories against their Haverford counterparts, Adam Chow and Chait Krishna, with scores of 8-1 and 8-2, respectively. 

The men's tennis team will now compete next weekend at the ITA Regional Championship from September 29 to October 1 at Mary Washington.
