Men's Tennis Wraps Up ITA Southeast Regional Championships

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Haverford College men's tennis team wrapped up its stint at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships on Saturday at the University of Mary Washington, with a strong showing in doubles from Stefan Johnson and Marko Arboleda, who reached the quarterfinals in championship doubles action. Arboleda also competed in the championship Round of 16 in singles play, while the Fords also posted standout performances in consolation action as well as the B1 singles flight. 

Championship Doubles
The pairing of Johnson and Arboleda impressed yet again, taking down a Johns Hopkins pair of Hanyu Liu and Pranav Gadiraju. The Fords won the round of 16 dual, 8-7, after prevailing in a tiebreak by a final score of 7-4.  The Fords advanced to the quarterfinals, where Utham Koduri and Michael Melnikov of Swarthmore, the top seeded duo, awaited. The eighth-seeded Fords pairing battled but eventually fell to the Garnet duo by an 8-4 final score. 

Championship Singles
First-year Arboleda continued into the Round of 16 for a matchup with Prem Dave of Johns Hopkins. In an all-out battle, Dave narrowly escaped in straight sets, taking identical 7-5, 7-5 victories to secure a place in the quarterfinals. 

Aiden Kim faced off with Winston Zhang of Swarthmore in championship singles consolation action, falling 4-6, 7-5, 10-5, as the Garnet player prevailed in a superbreaker. 

B1 Singles
In consolation action, Justin Minerva prevailed over Syver-August Meyer of conference foe Muhlenberg, 6-4, 6-4 to set up a consolation semifinal matchup against Gurv Suri of Salisbury. Minerva delivered a commanding 6-0 performance in the first set, but Suri responded with a 6-2 win in the second set to set up a superbreaker. In a marathon, back-and-forth tussle, the Sea Gulls player prevailed by a 16-14 final to advance, ending Minerva's stint. 

The Fords now will return to action on Saturday with the annual Alumni Match on Saturday, October 7. Competition is slated to begin at noon at the Bramall and Marshall Courts on the Haverford campus.
