Fords rally past TCNJ, 6-5

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Haverford College softball team capped off its week in Florida with a stirring seventh-inning rally that secured a 6-5 non-conference victory over The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) on Friday night.

Trailing 5-1 going into the bottom of the seventh, the Fords (9-3) manufactured five runs to claim the come-from-behind win and finish 6-2 on the spring break trip.

Jen DiCandilo provided the big blow in the inning with a run-scoring double--Haverford's only extra-base hit of the contest. Kristin Tatum worked her third walk of the game and later came around to score the winning run.

Emily Winesett (5-1) scattered six hits over seven innings of work to earn the victory. The freshman surrendered just one earned run and kept the Lions' bats silent over the final three innings.

Giving up five hits and two earned runs, Ashtin Helmer (2-1) took the loss in the circle for TCNJ (7-3).

Haverford's win over the Lions is the Fords' third this season over a 2012 NCAA tournament participant as it joins the ranks of conquests over Rowan University and Denison University.

Earlier in the day, Haverford fell to Suffolk University, 8-6. The Fords broke out to the early 4-2 advantage after two innings but Suffolk (1-7) battled back with two in the fifth and four in the sixth to take a slim 8-5 lead. Haverford did not go away quietly and struck back for one more in the top of the seventh when Tatum scored on a Lauren Touey single but time ran out on the Fords' rally. Elizabeth Newman, Touey and Stephanie Wolfson each finished with two hits. Sara Tauriello (3-1) suffered the loss in the circle despite two strikeouts in one winning of work.

Haverford gets back into action on Tuesday with a doubleheader against host Cabrini College beginning at 3 p.m.
