HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College softball team registered 21 hits on its way to sweeping Widener University in a non-conference doubleheader at Class of '95 Field on Tuesday afternoon. The Fords claimed an 11-3 five-inning victory in game one and then finished off the day with a 6-3 win in the night cap.

The Pride (10-16) posted two runs on two hits in the first inning to take the early lead in the second game of the day. Haverford (17-9) countered however with  four runs of their own in the bottom part of the frame due to three two-out singles. Dayle Comerford struck one through the right side that advanced Sarah Brody, on with a walk, to second. Kristin Tatum followed with a walk and Lauren Touey made the most of the bases-loaded opportunity at the plate. Touey chopped one over Jackie Korang's head at third to score Brody. Stephanie Wolfson capped the big innings with a bases-clearing single to deep right center.

The Fords added to their lead in the second when Comerford stroked her 11th double of the season off the base of the fence in center field. Comerford's drive scored Elizabeth Newman to extend the hosts' advantage to 5-2 entering the third.

Wolfson enabled Haverford to tack on another run in the third with a lead-off single through the left side. Coming to the plate with two outs, Newman delivered in a big way as her double to right allowed Wolfson, running aggressively on the play, to come home. 

Widener inched closer with one run on three hits in the fourth but the Pride would manage just one base runner over the next two innings. The visitors threatened in the seventh with two base runners before Emily Winesett struck out Korang and induced a fly ball from Kristina Kenney to thwart the rally.

Claire Fitzgerald (4-2) earned the win by scattering seven hits over five innings of work. Winesett registered her second save of the day by keeping Widener's bats silent over the final two innings.

Wolfson led the offense with a 3-for-3 performance while Newman and Comerford finished with two hits apiece.

The first game of the day (box score) saw the Fords get on the board first as Newman came around to score, after a lead-off double to right, courtesy of a sacrifice fly off the bat of DiCandilo.

The Pride moved ahead with two runs on four hits in the fourth but their lead would not last long as Haverford answered right back with four runs in the bottom of the frame. Gabrielle Sapienza started things off with a double to left and Newman helped fuel the big inning by working a walk. DiCandilo did not leave the runners on the base paths as her shot up the middle scored Sapienza and Newman. Comerford continued the impressive hitting display by the Fords with another single up the middle that chased starting pitcher Liz Carpino (2-5). Haverford worked two consecutive walks from relief pitcher Korang on its way to scoring two more runs in the inning.

Continuing to pour on the runs, the Fords added three more in the fourth on four more hits. Comerford provided the big blast with a two-run double to left that plated DiCandilo and Garlick.

Widener closed within five at 8-3 with one run in the fifth but DiCandilo put the finishing touches on a 3-for-3 game with a long drive over the fence in left center. The junior's three-run blast, the 10th home run of her career, closed out the five-inning victory.

DiCandilo became just the second player in program history to reach double figures in career home runs with the game-ending hit.

Eight different players notched hits in the opener including two-hit performances once again from Newman and Comerford.

Sara Tauriello (7-1) struck out five in three innings to register the win. Earning the first save of her career, Winesett struck out three and allowed just two hits in two innings of work.

The victory allowed Haverford to match last season's win total (17) with 12 regular-season contests still remaining on the schedule.

The Fords resume Centennial Conference play on Saturday when they travel to Franklin & Marshall College in the first of four consecutive road contests. The twinbill against the Diplomats begins at 1 p.m.
