Fords take two from Ursinus

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College softball team extended its Centennial Conference winning streak to six games on Thursday afternoon by sweeping past visiting Ursinus College at Class of '95 Field. The Fords registered a 6-4 victory in the opening game of the day before closing out the doubleheader with a 5-2 win in the nightcap.

Haverford (18-8, 7-3 CC) wasted no time in showing the Bears (7-19, 2-10) they were in for a long afternoon as the Fords used six hits to hang six runs on the board in the first inning of Game 1.

Ursinus pitcher Zoe Heinke (3-11) fell victim to Haverford's bats as she recorded just two outs before she was replaced by Caitlin Whelan.

Buoyed by the early run support, Fords' starting pitcher Sara Tauriello (6-1) cruised through the Bears' lineup. Tauriello struck out eight in four scoreless innings of work before giving way to senior Brittany Stevenson.

Ursinus threatened in the seventh when it loaded the bases with no outs but Haverford extinguished the rally to claim the home victory.

Julie Garlick finished 2-for-3 in the opener while Jill Schnall continued to be a force at the plate with a two-RBI single.

The Fords received another standout pitching performance in Game 2. Sophomore Emily Winesett (7-2) struck out seven and allowed just one hit over six innings in the circle. Heinke broke up Winesett's bid for a no-hitter with a double to left field in the sixth.

Haverford scored two runs in both the third and the fourth innings off of Whelan (4-7) and then added one final run in the fifth.

The Bears broke through for two runs in the seventh but would get no closer as freshman Kendall Chambers struck out Ellen Goldstein with the bases loaded to end the game.

Sophomore Kristin Tatum went 2-for-3 with one RBI to lead the Fords at the plate.

Haverford gets right back into action on Saturday with a conference twinbill at McDaniel College (18-10, 9-3) beginning at 1 p.m.
