Season Recap: Softball Hosts Centennial Conference Tournament

Signature wins: Haverford went a perfect 4-0 against rival Swarthmore during the 2019 season and was never really threatened during any of the first three contests. Although the fourth and final score of 16-11 indicates the Fords finished with a comfortable lead, that playoff game went down as an instant classic with the Fords rallying from an 8-2 deficit with eight runs in the fifth inning and six more in the sixth to advance to the Centennial Conference Championship series. Facing a six-run deficit with just three innings potentially remaining in its season, Haverford got home runs from senior captains Julia Blake and Rachel Wolfson, along with a round-tripper from Johanna Batterton to completely reverse the tables and even threaten the Garnet with a run-rule victory heading to the sixth inning.

The season will also be remembered for the team finishing 8-1 down the final stretch of Centennial Conference play to clinch home field advantage in the Centennial Conference Tournament for just the second time in school history. Capping that run was the team's bus trip out to Gettysburg on the last possible day of the regular season to complete the Centennial Conference game against the Bullets. The Fords needed just one inning to break that 6-6 tie and return the conference tournament back to the Class of '95 Field.

Season Awards:

Looking ahead: Haverford graduates middle infield mainstays Rachel Wolfson and Julia Blake who were four-year starters at shortstop and second base. However, with seven All-Centennial Conference selections in 2019, the Fords are in a strong position to once again contend for the conference title in 2020. Rising senior Temma Levis, the highest-ranked all-region player in school history, anchors a pitching staff which returns all five of its players who saw time in the circle this spring. Haverford also returns two All-Centennial Conference infielders (Emma Souter; third base and MaryBeth Stone; first base) and two All-CC outfielders (Nicole Swisher; left field & Ashley Sisto; centerfield) for what should be another high-powered offense next spring.
