Unanswered goals lead Fords to championship of Kickoff Classic

HAVERFORD, Pa. - Kara McMahon scored the second of three consecutive Haverford College goals to push the Fords' women's soccer team to a 3-1 win over visiting William Paterson University on Sunday afternoon in the championship game of the Kickoff Classic at Walton Field.

After a scoreless opening half, the Pioneers (0-1-1) were able to slip ahead of the Fords (2-0) with a breakaway goal by Michelle Marabondo in the early moments of the 54th minute. Haverford found the equalizer eight minutes later off the head of Michelle Babicz who converted Sarah Hoffman's corner kick into the tying goal.

The offensive pressure continued for the Fords as six minutes later Meg Boyer was able to get off a shot from the left of the goal which William Paterson goalkeeper Alyssa Falduto was able to punch out, but not clear the zone. The ball ended up back at Boyer's feet seconds later and her next shot clanged off the crossbar. A clearing attempt by the Pioneers failed and McMahon found herself alone to the right of the goal with the ball and popped a one-touch shot just under the crossbar for the eventual game-winner.

William Paterson created an opportunity to even the score in the 77th minute but defensive pressure forced a strong shot from the left to sail just wide of the right post. Boyer iced the game for Haverford in the 81st by ripping a shot from 15 yards out into the right side of the frame off a feed from Larisa Antonisse.

Possession time finished in favor of the Fords but the Pioneers pieced together a few dangerous scoring chances, though they were few. Haverford goalkeeper Robin Chernow earned the win after making two saves while the Fords' defenders were able to limit the visitors to just three of ten shots on goal.

Falduto took the loss in goal for William Paterson giving up three scores and registering three saves, all in the second half. Mary Jane Seiler was between the pipes in the opening half, making four saves without allowing a goal, before giving way to Falduto at the start of the second stanza.

The consolation game of the tournament, between Arcadia University and Scranton University, ended in a scoreless tie after two overtime periods.

The season continues for the Fords with a trip to Massachesetts for their next outing where they will participate in the Wellesley (College) Invitational on Sept. 8-9.
