Centennial opener tilts Fords' way

HAVERFORD, Pa. - In the Centennial Conference opener for each school, Haverford College's women's soccer team pulled out a 1-0 victory over visiting Dickinson College on Saturday afternoon, getting the game-winning goal from Meg Boyer during first-half action.

Boyer snared a thru ball from teammate Phoebe Miller then put a quick move on goalie Annie Weichert to beat the Dickinson netminder in the 31st minute to give Haverford (4-1, 1-0 CC) the lead over the Red Devils (5-1, 0-1) who entered the game unbeaten on the young season.

Saturday's preview looked to be a contest of a high-scoring Red Devil team and a defensively rock-solid Haverford squad. Dickinson had rolled in 19 goals while surrendering just two during its five-game unbeaten string to open the season. Conversely, the Fords had given up a total of three goals while scoring eight during their first four games.

In the end, Haverford's defense and goalie play from Robin Chernow (pictured, right) won out over the Dickinson attack.

Chernow finished with six saves on the day, three in each half, to earn the win and allow the Fords to open their conference slate with a victory. The Haverford defenders and midfielders limited the Red Devils -- averaging 23 shots per game while accumulating 30 corner kick opportunities -- to just nine shots and one set piece from the corner.

Weichert took the loss for Dickinson registering five saves with Boyer's goal proving to be the only blemish on day for the Red Devil senior.

The next outing for the Fords is another conference contest as Muhlenberg College comes to Walton Field for a Wednesday, 4 p.m. game.
