Early goals stand up for Fords in win over Diplomats

HAVERFORD, Pa. - Meg Boyer's early goal proved to be the game-winner Saturday afternoon as the Haverford College women's soccer team defeated visiting Franklin & Marshall College by a 2-0 score in Centennial Conference action at Walton Field.

The victory keeps the Fords (8-2-1, 3-1-1 Centennial) among the leaders in the league standings while F&M falls to 2-4-4 overall and 1-3-2 in the conference. Two teams ahead of Haverford within the standings -- Gettysburg and Swarthmore, both at 3-1 -- battle each other on Saturday allowing the Fords the opportunity to move ahead of the losing team.

Boyer's team-leading seventh goal of the year came late in the 20th minute Saturday. The junior tapped in a cross from Sophie Eiger to get the Fords on the scoreboard first. Eiger, who registered the assist on Boyer's tally, scored her own goal 10 minutes later burying a shot past F&M goalie Amanda McGowan after taking a feed from Phoebe Miller deep in the Dips' defensive zone.

The two-goal halftime lead stood up for the Fords as they limited F&M to just three first-half shots and only two more in the second 45 minutes of play.

For the game, Haverford accrued 19 shots of which 11 were on frame forcing McGowan to make nine saves in trying to keep her Diplomats in the contest. The Fords also earned a 6-1 advantage in corner kick chances, further limiting F&M's scoring opportunities.

Robin Chernow stopped both of the F&M shots that made it on goal Saturday, improving her season record to 8-2-1 with the win. McGowan took the loss to fall to 2-4-4 between the pipes for the Dips.

Haverford travels to Bethlehem, Pa., for its next game in the final non-conference contest of the season. The Fords will take on host Moravian College on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 4 p.m.
