Chen's 3rd of season not enough in loss to #17 Blue Jays

BALTIMORE, Md. – Allie Chen scored late in the second half but it wasn't enough for Haverford College's women's soccer team which went down in defeat, 5-1, to host and 17th-ranked Johns Hopkins University under the lights of Homewood Field on Saturday night.

Chen's third goal of the year got Haverford (9-3-1, 3-2-1 Centennial) on the board in the 77th minute but by then Hopkins ((10-3-1, 5-1) had already extended its 2-0 halftime lead to five, courtesy of four goals from Hannah Kronick who pocketed four tallies to increase her team lead in scoring to 18 goals for the year.

The Fords had held off the Hopkins attack in the early going of Saturday's first half, getting a pair of saves from goalkeeper Robin Chernow sandwiched around a blocked shot. Chernow's second save, however, allowed a rebound that came free for the Blue Jays' Kelly Baker and her ensuing shot at the 14:11 mark was able to sneak past Chernow for the early lead.

A Kronick goal in the 25th minute made it 2-0 but Haverford was able to hold off the Blue Jays for the remainder of the half, entering the intermission with the home team still in reach.

Kronick netted her second of the game six minutes into the second half, though, then added two more within the next 13 minutes to put the game out of reach.

Chen's unassisted marker came at the 76:29 mark and was a blast from 30 yards out.

Chernow (9-3-1) ended the night with seven saves, while Hopkins netminder Meredith Maguire (6-3-1) picked up the win after making a pair of saves.

Haverford continues league play with its next game coming up on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. when they will take on the host Owls of Bryn Mawr College.
