Fords claim 3rd seed in playoffs with scoreless tie against Garnet

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Haverford College women's soccer team locked up the third seed in the Centennial Conference playoffs as the result of a 0-0 double-overtime tie with host Swarthmore College on Saturday afternoon at Clothier Field.

The deadlock on the scoreboard enabled the Fords (12-3-2, 6-2-2 CC) to edge the Garnet (11-5-1, 6-3-1) by one point in the final regular season standings to claim a first-round bye in the upcoming conference tournament.

The two squads combined for 12 shots over the opening 45 minutes of play as both goalies were called on to make three saves apiece. Haverford had a 7-1 advantage in corners in the first half, but could not get anything past Swarthmore's Reba Magier (9-4-1) who turned away quality opportunities by Allie Chen and Michelle Babicz to keep the contest scoreless.

After intermission, the Fords took over control of the action as they outshot the Garnet 10-4 in the second half. Leading the squad with six shots on the day, Meg Boyer came close to putting Haverford in front in the 61st minute but her shot rang off the crossbar and Chen's rebound attempt was blocked.

The Fords continued to dictate play over the two overtime periods as they registered five shots while holding Swarthmore to none. Magier made the only save of the extra sessions and her eighth of the contest when she corralled a Phoebe Miller shot in the 95th minute.

Haverford's defense was solid all afternoon in holding the Garnet, ranked second in the conference in shots per contest at 19.25, to just three first-half shots on goal and nine shots overall in the game.

Robin Chernow (12-3-2) finished with three saves.

The tie gives both Haverford and Swarthmore half a point in this year's race for the Hood Trophy. After the day's earlier contests, Haverford holds a 3.5-1.5 lead in the annual rivalry between the two institutions.

Tonight's contest between Johns Hopkins University and Gettysburg College will determine who the Fords see in next weekend's conference semifinals. The winner of the game will clinch the top seed while the loser will become Haverford's next opponent.
