Fords edged by NYU

HOBOKEN, N.J. - The Haverford College women's soccer team fell 1-0 to New York University during opening-day action of the 2013 Stevens Institute of Technology Engineering Cup on Saturday afternoon.

A defensive battle ensued over the initial 45 minutes of the contest with just seven shots tallied total between the two clubs.

Haverford (0-2-1) looked to take control after intermission as it registered the first seven shots of second-half action. Despite dictating the play, the Fords could not break through on the scoreboard as NYU goalie Arianna Strome made several tough saves to keep the game scoreless.

The Violets (2-0-1) broke the deadlock with just under 20 minutes remaining in the contest when Cami Crawford tallied her first of the season.

Looking for the equalizer, senior Meg Boyer fired another tough shot on goal with 6:46 left on the clock but Strome once again had the answer.

Haverford outshot the Violets 13-6 overall with junior Phoebe Miller registering four.

Robin Chernow (0-2-1) made two saves in the loss.

The Fords continue Engineering Cup play on Sunday against Vassar College at noon. The Brewers claimed a 2-1 double-overtime victory over host Stevens in Saturday's opening game.
