Double-OT battle with Dickinson ends knotted 1-1

HAVERFORD, Pa. - Connie Friedman's goal early in second-half action provided host Haverford College with the lead in women's Centennial Conference soccer action Saturday at Walton Field, but visiting Dickinson College netted the equalizer late in the half of a game which ended tied 1-1 after two overtime periods.

The Fords (0-2-3, 0-0-1 CC) and Red Devils (4-1-1, 0-0-1) played scoreless soccer over the opening 45 minutes but Dickinson pressed the action in its attacking end forcing Haverford goalie Robin Chernow to come up with five saves before entering halftime tied at 0-0.

Early in the second half a ball lofted into the box by Sierra Houck on a Haverford corner kick opportunity bounced around off several players before finding its way to Friedman whose initial shot from in close was saved by Red Devil netminder Charlotte Armour. The rebound bounced up to Friedman who bodied the ball behind Armour to put the first goal up on the scoreboard at the 56:55 mark.

Haverford had several other scoring chances over the next 30 minutes but it was Dickinson that made the most out of a chance with the game winding down.

A Haverford foul just outside of the box with a little less than four minutes to play in regulation set up a scoring chance for the Red Devils who capitalized on the opportunity when Kerri Bergin banged a shot into the back of the net off a through ball from the free kick by Cate Maugle.

Both teams picked up scoring chances in the final minutes but failed to convert forcing overtime.

Haverford had the attacking edge throughout both 10-minute overtime periods forcing Armour to come up with five saves compared to just one required of Chernow. But neither team could come up with the game-winner, instead having to settle for a tie in the league opener for each team.

Chernow finished with eight saves while Armour stopped seven, getting assistance on one other shot on goal with a team save.

The Fords step out of Centennial action for their next two games, a match-up at Elizabethtown College on Sept. 21 followed by a road contest at Lebanon Valley College on Sept. 25.
