Women's Soccer Gets Past Widener, 1-0

Women's Soccer Gets Past Widener, 1-0

CHESTER, Pa. – The Haverford College women's soccer team used timely offense and another shutdown defensive performance to notch a 1-0 win against Widener on Wednesday night under the lights. The Fords (6-1-1) have now allowed just one goal during their seven match unbeaten streak.

Fittingly enough, it was a defensive player who also emerged as the offensive hero on Wednesday as Abby Letts scored the game-winning goal just 9:05 into regulation time off an assist from Katie Safter. Letts' goal was her first of this season and the second of her career after she also scored in the win against Muhlenberg a year ago. Nine different players have now combined to score the Fords' 10 goals this season. Safter's assist on the play made her the first player on the team with two assists as a total of 12 different players have recorded a point.

Haverford outshot the Pride by a substantial 20-3 margin over the 90 minutes. This was punctuated by an 8-1 advantage in the opening half and 12-2 edge over the final 45 minutes. That constant attack on offense left Kathy Prescott to make just one save in the second half while her counterpart, Jenna Keating, made 11 saves under the lights.

Prescott and the Fords have allowed just two goals in over 744 minutes of playing time. Prescott's shutout was the fifth of 2016 as the team has six clean sheets in total. The senior keeper now has nine shutouts for her career.

Women's soccer will now jump head first into Centennial Conference play during the month of October. Up first will be a home game this Saturday against Gettysburg. The Fords and Bullets are two of the five teams currently unbeaten in the very early portion of the Centennial Conference schedule. Saturday's game is scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m. and will be followed by the men's game at 3:30 p.m.
