Women's tennis concludes play at ITA Regional

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Senior Alex Ferrara and sophomore Robyn Himelstein fell in the quarterfinals of the championship doubles bracket on the second day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Regional hosted by the University of Mary Washington.

Ferrara and Himelstein lost 8-3 to Olivia Kasten and Ashnaa Rao from Johns Hopkins University. The Haverford duo had notched a pair of 8-1 wins on Saturday to advance to the quarterfinals of the championship draw.

Also competing in championship doubles action on Sunday were senior Kate Donches and freshman Abby Payson who registered an 8-1 victory over Amanda Bercovici and Kristen Cianci from Goucher College in the consolation bracket.

Freshman Jessica Liu and junior Marcela Niemczyk came through with another win for the Fords when they defeated Sarah Calabro and Erin Clay of Elizabethtown College, 8-3, in consolation play of the Blue 3 doubles draw.

Singles consolation action saw Liu fall to Virginia Wesleyan's Mia Proctor, 8-1, in the Blue 2 draw while Niemczyk dropped an 8-3 decision to Proctor's teammate Hannah Parent in the Blue 4 bracket.

Himelstein registered an 8-2 win over Swarthmore's Gayatri Iyengar in the first round of the consolation bracket of the championship draw. After receiving a bye in the second round, Himelstein battled Elizabethtown's Christine Evagelista in round three before falling, 8-6, in a tight match.

Also playing in the championship singles draw consolation bracket were Payson and Donches who competed against team members from host Mary Washington. Payson lost 8-1 to Claire Cahill while Donches came up short to Michaela Dowd by a score of 8-5.

The ITA Regional concludes on Monday with championship matches taking place in each of the draws. Sunday's action concluded the fall portion of Haverford's schedule.
