Women's Tennis Starts Season with Sweep of Alvernia

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Haverford College women's tennis team got its spring break started with a 9-0 sweep of Alvernia on Monday. The Fords (1-0), who went undefeated during their trip to Florida last season, did not drop a set during the first day of spring competition.

Starting off in doubles play, the newly-minted No. 1 pairing of Greta Koch and Robyn Himelstein did not drop a game en route to the Fords' first point of the afternoon. At No. 2 doubles, Courtney Ahmed and Jia-Ling Tuan nearly matched that feat. The sophomore duo conceded just one game in the 8-1 victory.

Even in the closest doubles match of the afternoon, Haverford still emerged an 8-3 winner as Stephany Prodromos and Caroline Steliotes filled that slot in the lineup for the Fords. After a strong doubles performance, the Fords carried the momentum to singles with five of the six players coming back to earn their second victories of the day.

After allowing just one game in her doubles match, Tuan was even more impressive in singles as she took the third slot by a 6-1, 6-0 margin. Koch, also a fellow sophomore, allowed just two games in the opening set to her opponent before locking down a 6-0 second set at No. 2 doubles.

Jessica Liu saw her first action of the spring at the No. 5 singles position. The Fords' co-captain allowed just a single game in her first set of the season and clinched the straight set victory with a 6-2 second set. Ahmed play one spot higher in the singles lineup and was victorious at No. 4 to help the Fords clinch their seventh point of the match. She won 6-2, 6-4.

Haverford completed the season opening sweep with 6-3, 6-3 victories at the top and bottom singles positions. Making her debut at No. 1 singles, Himelstein was the final match to finish play as she captured the top position. Prodromos added the first singles win of her spring season with another 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 6 singles.

Women's tennis will be back on the courts tomorrow at 6 p.m. against Coe College. The Fords will be looking for their first win over Coe in program history when these teams meet on Tuesday.
