HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's tennis team bounced back from its first conference defeat of the season with a resounding 9-0 sweep against visiting Ursinus on Wednesday afternoon. The Fords (6-5, 4-1 CC) took another big step towards a return to postseason play with the win against the Bears (10-5, 2-4 CC).

Starting off the bounce back performance were the wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. In the third doubles pairing, Jessica Liu and Clara Farrehi improved to 5-1 on the season together, including a 4-1 mark in Centennial Conference action, with an 8-2 win in doubles. Haverford's middle pairing of Jane Bary and Emily Shutman matched their teammate's records as a doubles pairing with an 8-3 victory in their match.

Haverford came away with each of the first three team points as Greta Koch and Abby Payson got a break of Ursinus' serve late in the No. 1 doubles match to record a hard-fought 8-6 victory. The Fords' top duo now has two wins in conference play together.

Ursinus was forced to retire from No. 4 singles after Bary had won three of the first five games in her match. The injury-shortened result makes Bary a perfect 4-0 in conference action this year to support her 6-2 overall record. Liu also stayed unbeaten in conference singles with a 6-4, 6-1 victory during the No. 6 singles match. The Fords' co-captain now has a team-high eight victories in singles this year.

The most convincing win of the night came from the No. 5 singles match as Rory Lewis did not drop a game en route to her 6-0, 6-0 blanking. Lewis is now 4-1 in conference singles play this spring. Co-captain Payson also blanked her opponent in the opening set of No. 3 singles and won her sixth singles match this season with a 6-0, 6-2 win.

In the top two positions, Shutman was a 6-2, 6-2 winner at No. 1 singles. She now has three wins in the top singles match for the Fords this spring. Koch opened her match with a 6-2 first set and closed her night with a 7-5 win in the second. Koch also has three wins in singles this spring after her win at No. 2 singles on Wednesday.

Women's tennis will be back at home this Friday as the Fords host No. 15 Johns Hopkins. That match is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start on the Marshall Tennis Courts.
