Fall Recap: Women's Tennis Impresses at ITA Southeast Regional

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Haverford College women's tennis team wrapped up its fall season in impressive fashion at the 2021 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Regional Championships on September 25 and 26.

In perhaps the most emphatic result of the entire tournament, Rachael Fitzgerald took down her opponent from host Mary Washington. Fitzgerald certainly proved to open her first year campaign with an impressive fall as she downed top-seeded Abigail Moghtader in three sets (3-6, 6-0, 7-6(4)) after previously posting a strong showing at the Swarthmore Invitational.

Fitzgerald was eventually tripped up by Cassidy Landau of F&M, but not before sending a shockwave through the entire opening day of competition with the win. Emily Oh also captured an opening round victory in the championship flight, also battling to take down Emily Lacksen of W&L in three sets (6-3 4-6 6-1).

In B1 action, Ellie Esterowitz took control of that draw behind convincing victories over opponents from Washington & Lee and Carnegie Mellon. In the final against Becket Waters of W&L, Esterowitz took a relatively straightforward 8-1 win to capture the flight.

Other highlights included Anne Tobin and Fitzgerald teaming up to go a perfect 4-0 in the B1 Doubles bracket, capturing that flight with wins over opponents from Southern Virginia, Averett, Lynchburg, and Swarthmore. Liv Pindzola and Annie Barrett also picked up a win in the B2 flight against Sweet Briar. The doubles pairing of Emily Oh and Ellie Esterowitz looked strong in dispatching a pair of conference foes from Franklin & Marshall by an 8-2 final while Mimi Lavin and Lisette Pham looked strong, being edged by a formidable grouping from Johns Hopkins.

The spring dual-match schedule is slated to begin on March 6 with the Spring Break Trip to Central Florida. Haverford will participate in five matches against NC Wesleyan, RPI, Carnegie Mellon, Kenyon, and Wesleyan before returning for the home opener on March 26 against Stevens.
