Strong start for women to open indoor season

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The 2011-12 indoor track & field season got underway Saturday for the Haverford College women's team with the Haverford Holiday Meet in Alumni Field House where two Fords set meet records, a third was a half-second away from a record, and several freshmen made solid debuts.

Kylie Lipinski posted a winning leap of 11.07 meters (36 feet, 4 inches) in the triple jump, smashing the old meet record of 10.42m and surpassing the best jump of her 2010-11 season (10.78m) which won the event in the 2011 Centennial Conference championship meet.

The day's other new record by a Haverford athlete came in the mile where freshman Kathryn Balmer raced to the front with a winning time of 5 minutes, 24.54 seconds. Freshman teammate Phoebe Miller finished second in 5:30.84, also coming in ahead of the old record (5:34.83).

Sophomore Nicole Inman was second in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:03.69, just shy of the meet record (1:03.11) which was broken Saturday by the event's winner, Brittany Diehl of Widener University (1:02.16).

The Fords picked up a first-place finish in the shot put from freshman Robin Chernow whose toss of 10.23m (33-6.75) bested sophomore teammate and event runner-up Hayley Lowrance's second-place throw of 9.63m (31-7.25).

Another Haverford freshman, Jade Andrade, picked up a pair of runner-up finishes in her first collegiate indoor meet. Andrade was second in both the 60 meter and 200 meter dashes. In the high jump, freshman jumper Carolyn Oehrig cleared a best height of 1.47m (4-9.75) to bring home yet another second place for Haverford.

Carson Willis captured first place in the 60 meter hurdles then placed fourth in a new event for the sophomore, the pole vault.

The Fords won't be back on the competition track until 2012 when they'll head to the famous New York City Armory for the NYU Gotham Cup on Jan. 12.
