Haverford takes advantage of Last Chance Meet

NEW YORK - Kylie Lipinski, Kathryn Balmer, and Phoebe Miller of the Haverford College women's indoor track team made the most of one last opportunity to improve upon season results and achieve NCAA championship qualifying-status when they traveled to the Armory for the Columbia Last Chance Meet on Saturday afternoon.

Lipinski, named Centennial Conference indoor field performer of the year for the second-straight season, leapt to a career-best distance of 11.52 meters (37 feet, 9 1/2 inches) in the triple jump that bettered her program-record effort of 11.16m (36-7.5) established at the Lafayette-Rider Invitational on Feb. 10. Sitting in the 41st spot on the NCAA championship Division III qualifer list going into Saturday, Lipinski jumped up to 18th on the strength of her latest performance.

Also attaining a career best on Saturday was Balmer who, by running to a 2 minutes, 15.67 seconds finish in the 800 meter run, established a program record of her own. Balmer, clipping the previous record of 2:16.22 held by Annick Lamar '08, not only moved onto the NCAA qualifer list due to Saturday's time but all the way to the 27th spot. Her time is also the third- fastest time by a freshman in D-III this season.

Miller completed the Haverford trifecta of career-best performances with a time of 5:05.85 in the mile. Improving upon her previous career-best by over three seconds and running the second-fastest time by a freshman in D-III this season, Miller now sits 35th on the qualifer list.

Balmer and Miller, who had already qualified with Hannah Davis and Sara Hess for the national meet as members of the distance medley relay team, now will have the opportunity to join Lipinski in competing individually as well.

The national championship meet will take place next weekend, March 9-10, in Grinnell, Iowa.
