Hendry sets new program mark in 3,000m at NYU Team Challenge

NEW YORK - Freshman Fiona Hendry made her first collegiate track meet a memorable one as she set a new program record in the 3,000 meter run to lead the Haverford College women's indoor track team to a tie for eighth at the New York University Team Challenge on Saturday night at The Armory.

The Fords accumulated 25 points to tie for eighth in the team rankings with Oneonta State University of New York. Seventeen squads competed overall including several Division I teams. St. John's University took the Team Challenge title with 147.50 points.

Hendry, a cross country All-American this fall, claimed first in the 3K with a time of 10 minutes, 0.08 seconds to break the program's previous indoor standard of 10:03.41 set by Jane Steinemann '04. Sophomore Kelley Riffenburgh just missed in scoring more points for Haverford in the event as her career-best time of 10:43.22 was good for ninth.

Also running well on Saturday were Cara Keifer, Katie Balmer and Nora Weathers. Keifer finished fifth in the 800 with a time of 2:21.45 while Balmer took seventh (3:05.76) in the first 1,000m race of her career. Weathers, another freshman who excelled in cross country this fall, came close to adding points to the Fords' team total with a ninth-place finish (5:20.04) in the mile.

Emma Kornetsky's first triple jump competition of the season resulted in a strong showing as her leap of 10.06 meters (33 feet) was good for fourth. Kornetsky added a 10th-place finish in the long jump with a season-best distance of 4.90m (16-01.00). Carolyn Oehrig also earned points for Haverford in the field events with a fifth-place showing in the high jump as her mark of 1.50m (4-11.00) just missed her career-best height of 1.52m.

Looking to build off the strong showing in New York, the Fords return to action on Thursday, Jan. 24 when they host the Haverford Invitational at The Gary Lutnick Tennis & Track Center in Alumni Field House at 4:15 p.m.
