Ferry Named Conference Indoor Athlete of the Week

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Mairead Ferry has been named the Centennial Conference Women's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week after her record-breaking performance at the Haverford-Widener Holiday Invitational. The Fords' sophomore broke the school indoor record in the pole vault as she cleared 10 feet, four inches.

The previous school record of exactly 10 feet was first set by Sarah Burke '06 during December of her senior season. Melissa Nylander '08 matched that height during February of her senior campaign. Competing in pole vault for the first time this winter, Ferry cleared 10 feet on her first attempt at the height. She broke the school record on her third and final attempt at 10 feet, four inches (3.15 meters).

Ferry topped her closest competitor by 45-hundredths of a meter in the Holiday Invitational, a mark nearly 18 inches better than the second place finisher. She is currently ranked third overall in the Centennial Conference with her new career best height in the event. Her mark is currently 30th overall in all of Division III indoor track & field.

In addition to excelling in the pole vault, Ferry won the 60 meter hurdles in a time of 9.48 seconds last Thursday. She also placed sixth overall in the 200 meters with a time of 28.27 seconds. Ferry finished second in the conference in the 60 meter hurdles last winter and was third in the outdoor season during the 100 meter hurdles.

Women's indoor track & field will now have just over a month away from competition during the winter break. When the team returns for the spring semester, its first competition will come at the Kutztown Invitational on Friday, January 15.
