Women's Track & Field Crowns Seven Champs at Centennial Championship

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Haverford College women's indoor tack & field team came away with seven gold medals across the 18 events at the 2016 Centennial Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships. Those seven conference championship performances are the second-most all-time in program history. Only the 2008-09 team, who won five individual golds and three relay golds during its team championship, earned more top honors than this year's team.

As a team, Haverford finished second to Johns Hopkins with 120.5 points. That total was the highest the Fords have scored at the indoor championship since the team finished runner-up with 134 points during the 2010-11 season. Following up Amelia Keyser-Gibson's championship run in the 5,000 meters on Saturday, the Fords got four more individual champions and a pair of relay championships on Sunday.

Nora Weathers was crowned a conference champion for the first time during her indoor career after second and third place finishes in the previous two years. She climbed the final rung in her goal medal pursuit on Sunday with a personal best time of 5:58.12. That time keeps her third in the Haverford record books. Her time is ranked 12th in the NCAA this season and beats out her mile qualifying time to the NCAA Championship from a year ago.

A fellow top seed, Katie Sullivan also ran a personal best Sunday in the 800 meters to win her event in a time of 2:16.90. Her newest career best time now ranks her third in school history. Sullivan earns her first Centennial Conference individual title after placing third during last year's indoor championships. She was runner-up in the 800 meters during the outdoor season as a freshman.

Claire Sargent also lived up to her pre-meet expectations by winning the shot put. After finishing in the runner-up spot a season ago, the Fords' sophomore won her first CC individual title with a throw of 11.79 meters (38-08.25). Her throw was over a foot and a half better than her closest competitor from Muhlenberg. Grace Mathis also scored in the field events with a pole vault leap of 2.59 meters which tied her for seventh place.

Brittany Steele repeated her championship run from her freshman season in the 60 meter dash. Steele ran a season-best time of 7.95 seconds in the preliminaries to become the top qualifier into the final. The school record holder in the event won Sunday's race with a time of 7.97 seconds in the dash to the championship. Taylor Murphy placed fourth in the event. Her time of 8.03 seconds in the final was a personal best for her and keeps her ranked third in school history.

Murphy and Steele also scored for the Fords in the 200 meter dash. In that event, Murphy was the runner-up finisher with a time of 26.43. She was edged out by just six-hundredths of a second in the finals, but moves up to third in school history with her newest personal best. Murphy also ran a personal best time in the 60 meter hurdles to finish third in that event. Also in the sprints, Steele added a fifth-place finish in the 200 meters, while Tess Oberholtzer's PR in the 60 meter hurdles placed her sixth at the meet and seventh in Haverford's record books. In the distance races, Nicole Giannetti scored for the Fords with seventh-place finish in the 3,000 meters (10:24.21).

Haverford also won the distance medley relay and 4x200 meter relay. The DMR team of Giannetti, Amy Zamora, Sophie Drew, and Keyser-Gibson was just over three seconds faster than Johns Hopkins. That championship relay finished in a time of 12:34.82. The Fords won the 4x200 meter relay in a time of 1:47.06. That mark set by Steele, Murphy, Kerry Quigley, and Oberholtzer was six-tenths of a second faster than runner-up Ursinus and ranks fifth in the school's record books. The Fords were also runner-up in the 4x800 meter relay and finished fifth in the 4x400 meter relay.

In an attempt to improve on some times for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, the women's indoor track & field team will next compete at the Tufts Final Qualifying Meet on Friday, March 4 at 5 p.m. The NCAA Indoor Championship is set for March 11-12.
