Strong showing for Fords on Day 2 of Centennial championship

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - The Haverford College women's track team made the most of Day 2 of the Centennial Conference championship meet at Ursinus College on Saturday afternoon. Registering multiple top finishes in the long jump and the steeplechase, the Fords moved up to fourth in team standings at the conclusion of the day's events.

Robin Chernow registered the Haverford's initial point of Day 2 with a sixth-place finish in the first heptathlon of her career.

The Fords picked up 11 more points due to a strong showing in the long jump. Senior Kylie Lipinski and junior Emma Kornetsky claimed fourth and fifth, respectively. A season-best effort of 4.87 meters (5 feet, 11.75 inches) by Carolyn Oehrig took seventh.

Oehrig's season-best performance of 1.47m (4-9.75) in the high jump, which was good for fifth, also helped the Haverford cause.

Haley Lowrance added five more points during the field portion of the meet with a fourth place in the discus.

Sophomore Chelsea Thorsheim finished third (11 minutes, 26.20 seconds) in the 3,000 meter steeplechase for the Fords' highest finish of the day. Hope Rainey and Andrea Tocci registered additional points in the event for Haverford with season-best efforts to place fourth and sixth, respectively.

Tallying the final points of the day for the Fords, the 4x800 relay team of Kathryn Balmer, Sara Hess, Kara McMahon and Phoebe Miller took third with a time of 9:30.03.

Saturday's schedule of events also included several trials. Nicole Inman, Hannah Davis and Mariah Braxton ran well and qualified for the finals in the 400 meter dash that will take place tomorrow. Balmer, the top qualifier, and Miller will also compete in the finals of the 800.

Scoring 41 points on the day and 44 overall, Haverford moved from sixth to fourth in the team scoring. Johns Hopkins University (64.50), Dickinson College (54) and Ursinus (46.50) currently occupy the top three spots.

The final day of competition begins Sunday at 11 a.m. with the shot put and ends with the awards ceremony slated for 4:15 p.m.
