Lipinski takes gold as Fords finish fourth

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - The Haverford College women's track team put together another impressive effort on the final day of the Centennial Conference track and field championship meet Sunday at Ursinus College.

Shining brightly once again in the spotlight of the conference championship, senior Kylie Lipinski captured her third-straight triple jump crown. Leaping to a distance of 11.37 meters (37 feet, 3.75 inches), Lipinski nabbed the fourth gold medal overall of her outdoor career. Emma Kornetsky (fifth) and Carolyn Oehrig(seventh) attained career-best distances to add to the triple jump scoring windfall.

Dominique Meeks' season-best effort of 11.48m(37-8) earned third in the shot put to score the Fords' initial points on the last day of competition. One day removed from competing in the first heptathlon of her career, Robin Chernow also had a strong performance in the shot put to grab fourth.

The freshman tandem of Kathryn Balmer and Phoebe Miller raced around the track to another strong showing. Balmer took silver in the 1,500 meter run with a collegiate-best time of 4 minutes, 42.82 seconds while Miller took sixth. Balmer and Miller also added points in the 800 where they took fourth and seventh, respectively.

Running a career-best time of 59.95, Junior Hannah Davis claimed the bronze in the 400 which proved to be a big event for Haverford. Accounting for the other Fords' points were sophomores Nicole Inman (sixth) and Mariah Braxton (eighth).

The 4x100 relay team of Kimberly Carlomagno, Oehrig, Kornetsky and Lipinski chipped in with a fifth-place finish to help the cause. Also finishing fifth, the 4x400 quartet of Lipinski, Inman, Braxton and Davis earned Haverford's final points of the competition.

Johns Hopkins University took the overall title for the third consecutive year with 208.50 points.
The next three spots were tightly contested as Dickinson College (116) and host Ursinus (115.50) just edged the Fords (107) for second and third, respectively.

The results of the meet also gives the Fords a point in the race for the 2012 Hood Trophy as Swarthmore College finished fifth in the standings. The friendly competition between the two institutions stands at a tie pending the men's track and field final results.
