Women's Track & Field Shines at Chester Challenge

CHESTER, Pa. – The Haverford College women's outdoor track & field team had five individuals who ran the best time in the Centennial Conference this season to highlight Saturday's action at Widener's Chester Challenge.

The first of those conference best times for the 2016 season came with a Haverford heavy field in the 1500 meters. Nora Weathers, the school record holder in this event, placed third overall behind two runners from the University of Pennsylvania as she finished in a time of 4:36.16. Nicole Giannetti (4:37.78) and Amelia Keyser-Gibson (4:40.09) finished fifth and sixth in the field. They ran the fifth and ninth fastest times in school history on Saturday. MaryKate Cavanaugh (4:57.21) and Sophie Drew (4:57.57) also finished in the top 10 at Widener.

Brittany Steele ran the fastest time in the conference this year in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes. Steele crossed the line fifth overall in the 200 meters with a time of 25.86 seconds. She was eighth in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.61 seconds. Taylor Murphy was eighth in the 200 meters with a time of 26.06 seconds, the third fastest mark in school history. She also ran the fifth fastest time in school history during the 100 meters as she placed 11th with a time of 12.85 seconds. Her eighth place finish in the 100 meter hurdles in a time of 15.62 seconds is now the eighth fastest time in school history. Haverford also entered a 4x100 relay that placed sixth in the field with a time of 4:16.39.

Maggie Heffernan was Haverford's lone champion on Saturday. In a two person steeplechase field, she edged out her only competition by over 25 seconds. Her time of 11:24.00 is the fastest in the conference this season. Katie Sullivan also beat out her own season best time to improve the conference mark. She finished fourth overall with a time of 2:16.16.

Haverford had multiple top 10 finishes in the field events. Grace Mathis placed fifth overall in the triple jump with her best leap being marked at 10.06 meters. She added a seventh place showing in the pole vault to her afternoon as she cleared 2.66 meters for the second time this season. Emily Anderson added a fifth place showing in the javelin with her best throw traveling 25.93 meters. She was also ninth in the shot put, 11th in the discus, and 12th in the hammer.

Women's outdoor track & field will be back at Widener next weekend for the Widener Invitational that will run from Friday, April 22 through Saturday, April 23.
