Sullivan, Heffernan Win for Women's Track & Field at Widener

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's outdoor track & field team brought home two individual titles during its second day of the Widener Invitational. The Fords' wins came from Katie Sullivan in the 1500 meters and Maggie Heffernan in the steeplechase.

Sullivan won the 1500 meters in a time of 4:36.93. That time is the fifth quickest in school history. She was nearly four seconds faster than her closest competitor from Stockton. Liana Alves also competed in this event and finished in a time of 5:29.21. Heffernan won the steeplechase in a time of 11:26.27. Her time was nearly 13 seconds faster than her closest competition which came from Misericordia.

Haverford also had four other top 10 finishes in the track. The team entered four individuals in the 800 meters. Nora Weathers finished third overall in that field with a time of 2:16.44. Sophie Drew (2:27.21), Yue Xiang (2:28.94), and Caroline Henry (2:30.18) also competed in this event. Taylor Murphy placed eighth overall in the 100 meter hurdles. She finished in a time of 15.81 seconds, while Anya Bernhard finished in a time of 22.88 seconds.

The Fords also got top 10 finishes from each of their two relays. The 4x100 relay team placed sixth overall in a time of 51.03 seconds. The 4x400 relay was 10th overall with a time of 4:16.47. Other events that Haverford entered included the 100 meters and 400 meter hurdles. Murphy was also the team's top finisher in the 100 meters with a time of 13.08 seconds. Bernhard also entered in the event and finished in 16.59 seconds. Tess Oberholtzer (1:09.87) and Sydney West (1:09.99) finished in 13th and 14th, respectively, in the 400 hurdles.

During the field events, Claire Sargent made her spring season debut and unleashed a throw of 11.90 meters to place second in the shot put. Emily Anderson was 22nd overall in that event with a distance of 9.12 meters.

Haverford also entered a trio of jumpers to round out a full day of action. Elizabeth Reikowski highlighted those finishes with a seventh place showing in the triple jump. Her best leap was marked at 10.54 meters. Grace Mathis was 23rd overall in that event with a jump of 9.76 meters. Emily Williams contested the long jump for Haverford and placed 35th with her best leap coming at 4.08 meters.

Women's track & field will host its only home meet of the 2016 outdoor season this week. Due to forecasted rain, the pole vault and high jump will be contested this Monday from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the Alumni Field House. The rest of the events are on as scheduled for Tuesday, April 26 on Johnson Track and the brand new throwing area.
