Claire Sargent Competes at Historic Penn Relays

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Haverford College women's track & field senior captain Claire Sargent competed in the historic Penn Relays at the University of Pennsylvania on Thursday. She was competing in her specialty event, shot put, during the oldest and largest track and field competition in the United States, hosted annually since April 21, 1895.

Sargent placed 40th overall with her best throw of the afternoon being marked at 11.75 meters. Competing against some of the best throwers from across the country, Sargent was eighth among all Division III athletes.

The Fords' senior already holds both Haverford's indoor and outdoor shot put records and will enter her final Centennial Conference Championship next weekend as a three-time conference champion. She has also finished second in the shot put during three of her other conference appearances between the indoor and outdoor seasons, making her a six-time All-Centennial Conference performer to date. Additionally, she has been named the Centennial Conference Field Athlete of the Week on four occasions throughout her career.

Women's track & field will cap a busy week for the team at TCNJ's Lion Invitational on Saturday. That meet in scheduled to get underway at 10 a.m. and will be the team's final competition before the 2018 Centennial Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The conference championships will run from Friday, May 4 through Sunday, May 6 on the campus of Ursinus.
