Men’s basketball receives 2010-11 Sam Schoenfeld Sportsmanship Award

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College men's basketball team has been named the winner of the 2010-11 Sam Schoenfeld Sportsmanship Award on Wednesday. The award is presented by the Collegiate Basketball Officials Association (CBOA).

The Fords are receiving the overall award for the first time. The Sam Schoenfeld Sportsmanship Award, which is in its 55th year, is the highest honor that the CBOA gives at the collegiate level.

Head coach Mike Mucci will accept the award on the team's behalf at the CBOA's Annual Banquet, which will take place Saturday, April 30 at the Tropicana in Atlantic City, N.J.

Haverford is winning the overall award for the first time, but the team has claimed Philadelphia Area honors five times—including back-to-back wins for the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons—during Mucci's tenure.

The award is given annually to an institution that best demonstrates sportsman, character and ethics among its coaches, players and fans. The CBOA selects a winner from each of its 11 regions – which range from New England to Washington, D.C. The overall winner of the award is selected out of those 11 teams.
