Men's Basketball Falls at Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -  Host Swarthmore (16-8, 13-4 CC) used a big first half to take down visiting Haverford (4-20, 1-16 CC), 93-49, in Centennial Conference men's basketball action at the Tarble Pavilion Wednesday evening. The Garnet poured in 15 threes to help seal the home win.

Leading the charge for Haverford, Gabriel Franklin contributed 10 points, supported by Ali Kaan Bek with eight points off the bench. Nicholas Stewart and Brandon Banadda each contributed seven points, while Luke Phillips added six, with two pivotal second-half three-pointers.

Swarthmore showcased a balanced offense with four players reaching double figures. Cal Hanson led the charge with 18 points, connecting on 4-of-5 attempts from beyond the arc. Vinny DeAngelo was also impressive from three-point range, tallying 11 points with a 3-of-5 shooting performance from long distance. Eddie Paquette and Caleb Aurelien each contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The Garnet benefited from a hot start early, embarking on a 12-0 run, highlighted by DeAngelo's three-pointers. Swarthmore's lead ballooned to 30-4, with Michael Caprise contributing to the charge. Although Haverford managed a brief  4-0 response with Banadda's three, DeAngelo swiftly countered, maintaining Swarthmore's commanding lead at 33-7.

At halftime, Swarthmore held a 52-13 lead and proceeded to build on it during the early stages of the second half. Nyle Coleman and Aidan Godfrey contributed to their lead with successful three-point shots, reaching a 67-19 advantage. Although Haverford made a spirited 18-2 run, led by Franklin, Stewart, and Logan Brown, Swarthmore retained control down the stretch. Phillips sealed the game with back-to-back three-pointers in the closing moments.

Looking ahead, Haverford concludes the 2024 season against McDaniel on Saturday in Westminster, Maryland with the matchup against the Green Terror scheduled for approximately 3 p.m. following the women's game against McDaniel at 1 p.m.
