Cohen nets another double-double but Fords tripped up by Mules

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Haverford College's Brett Cohen notched his fourth double-double of the year with an 18-point, 10-rebound outing Wednesday night in Centennial Conference men's basketball action at Gooding Arena, but it wasn't enough as the Fords dropped a 72-56 decision to visiting Muhlenberg College.

Haverford slips to 5-9 overall and 3-6 in the Centennial with Wednesday's results while Muhlenberg pushes its conference record to 5-4 with an overall mark of 9-7 after the victory.

First-half play was a back-and-forth 20 minutes of action as the lead changed hands 11 times and was tied on four other occasions. Haverford's Louis Cipriano opened the scoring with a smooth jumper from two steps inside the arc on the first possession of the night. The Mules' Austin Curry answered 18 seconds later with a 3-pointer to set the tone of the see-saw half.

The Fords were 12-of-26 (46 percent) from the floor in the opening half, led by Lucas Colombo's nine points which included one trey. The Mules shot 40 percent from the field but owned a small edge in getting to the free throw line which enabled the visitors to close out the half with a narrow 31-30 lead.

The opening minutes of the second half were as equally contested as the first, but Haverford's shooters fell into a cold spell which allowed Muhlenberg to slip away and build a double-digit lead as the half wound into its eighth minute.

In addition to Cohen's efforts, the Fords got a nine-point, nine-rebound night from Colombo. Malique Killing led the Mules' attack with 20 points but got help from Austin Curry and Kevin Hargrove who added 19 and 14 points, respectively.

Haverford hits the road for its next two contests, both league games, heading to Gettysburg College on Saturday afternoon followed by an 8 p.m. match-up on Wednesday, Jan. 23 at Swarthmore College.
