Schoch, Arnold earn All-American status at national championship meet

DELAWARE, Ohio – Haverford College juniors Tim Schoch and Eric Arnold raced into the top-eight of the men's 1,500 meter run Saturday afternoon to earn All-America recognition at the NCAA Division III 2011 Outdoor Track & Field Championship, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University.

The pair, along with sophomore teammate Ivo Milic-Strkalj, qualified for Saturday's final during preliminary heats Thursday afternoon when the 12 runners moving on raced to times within 0.73 seconds of each other.

Schoch finished third in the championship heat with a time of 3 minutes, 55.17 seconds. Arnold posted an eighth-place time of 3:56.34 while Milic-Strkalj (4:03.61) finished 12th.

Arnold picks up his third all-American mention of the year after earning national honors at the NCAA 2010 D-III cross country championship and during the indoor track & field season as a member of Haverford's all-American distance medley relay quartet which included Schoch and Milic-Strkalj.

Saturday's 1,500 was won by Fredonia State's Nick Guarino who captured the title with a winning time of 3:53.43.

Two more Fords raced in the championship meet's final individual event Saturday, the 5,000. Senior Joseph Carpenter finished one place shy of all-America status coming in ninth with a time of 14:55.00. Senior Anders Hulleberg was 17th in the 20-man field, closing out his Haverford career with a time of 15:24.71. The event titleist, Mike Spain of North Central College, set a stadium record with his time of 14:41.15.

in the team race, Haverford's men finished in a tie for 33rd with Delaware Valley College, each scoring seven points. North Central accumulated 58 points to edge out runner-up Wisconsin-La Crosse by two points for the 2011 title. McMurry (Texas) University climbed into third place with 50 points after capturing the final event, the 4x400 relay.
