Bregman, Graves win events on Day 2 of Centennial championship

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Haverford Collge's men's outdoor track & field team captured a trio of first-place finishes during the second day of the three-day 2012 Centennial Conference championship meet hosted by Ursinus College.

Avi Bregman won the 3,000 meter steeplechase for the Fords' first crown Saturday and Gibby Graves added the high jump title later in the day. Day 2's events concluded with Haverford winning the 4x800 meter relay.

Bregman won his first Centennial championship by posting a time of 9 minutes, 25.18 seconds in the day's first track event. Graves cleared a winning height of 1.92 meters (6 feet, 3 1/2 inches) in the high jump and the Fords added more points in the event with Thomas Mahoney's sixth-place finish.

In the 4x800, Tim Schoch anchored the Fords' quartet to a finishing time of 7:46.24, edging out runner-up Gettysburg College by 1.69 seconds. Soren Rasmussen led the Haverford quartet off with Ivo Milic-Strkalj and Andrew Golato running the middle two 800s.

In other event-final action Saturday, Andrew Bennett was fourth in the long jump and Kahmai Martin-Kirkland was eighth in the discus.

Sam Callon moved into Sunday's championship heats of the 200 and 400 meter dashes by winning his preliminary heats Saturday. He raced to a career-best of 22.58 seconds in the 200 and posted a time of 50.05 in the 400. Willie Xiang will join Callon in the championship of the 400 after running to a career-best time of 50.13 to qualify sixth.

The Fords will have three participants in the 800's championship heat Sunday afternoon. Both Schoch and Golato advanced to Sunday by winning their respective prelim heats, and Michael Riccio will join the two after qualifying with a career-best time of 1:54.01.

Johns Hopkins University slipped ahead of the Fords in the team race after two days of competition, finishing Saturday with 76 points to the 73 that Haverford posted. Dickinson College sits in third with 51 points.
