Men's Track & Field Hosts Widener In Monday Dual Meet Action

HAVERFORD, Pa. - Hosting its annual home meet on the Johnson Track for the first time since the 2019 season, the Haverford College men's outdoor track & field team posted a big Monday taking home a bevy of top times and marks. A blazing fast 800 meters saw three Haverford runners go under the two-minute milestone, with Jamie Moreland recording a 1:53.11, a new personal best in the distance and the 43rd best in the nation so far this season. 

The time is also the second-best in the Centennial Conference thus far in 2022. Matt Denton (1:59.74) and Jeffrey Allen (1:59.74) also went under two minutes for third and fourth after Haverford alum and assistant coach Greg Morgan finished second as an unattached athlete.

Scott Kaiser crossed in fifth (2:00.78) while Michael Franco was sixth (2:04.01). Nick Scardigno (2:09.09) and William Harris (2:12.03) also posted top 10 finishes in the distance while Seawon Park (2:14.42) and Kieran McDonnell (2:13.76) were just outside the top 10. 

In the men's 100 meters, it was Alex Reichard leading the pack with an 11.40 for the evente crown. Amon-Ra Kamit was second in 12.45 while Boahen Kwakye (12.95) and David Cole (13.02) were fourth and fifth, respectively.

A large grouping in the 1,500  meters was paced by Nathan Leighninger, who won his second event title in as many meets with a 4:01.09 to pace a distance contingent that also included Reed Solomon (4:02.87) in second and Nico Tripeny in third (4:04.26). Max Brelig (4:05.99), Amos Karlsen (4:06.31), Matt Katz (4:06.34), Aaron Bratt (4:07.52), Ryan Quenemoen (4:11.57), Peter La Rochelle (4:13.40) and Luca Ponticello (4:14.48) rounded out the top 10 in the event, which was populated solely by Haverford runners. 

The 400 meter grouping saw Ravi Eaton take an event title, with his mark of 50.92, ahead of teammate Jacob Foster (52.25) in second and Matthew Ruiz (63.23) in fifth. The 200 meter contingent was led by Jonathan Hill in 23.53, with Nathan Ma in second (25.16) and David Cole in third (27.17). Ruiz was the fourth place finisher in 27.41 while Kevin Vilalfane crossed in 27.83 for fifth. 

Alex Reichard looked strong in taking the long jump title, with a mark of 6.45 meters (21 feet, two inches) while Ma finished third (5.81 meters). 

In the shot put, Rasaaq Shittu paced Haverford finishers in fourth, with a mark of 9.66 meters (31 feet, 8.5 inches) with Cyrus Slavin (8.26 meters or 27 feet, 1.25 inches), Tiger Wang (6.67 meters or 21 feet and 10.75 inches), and Ethan Ezray (6.28 meters or 20 feet, 7.25 inches) rounding out the Fords finishers. 

In Javelin, Slavin took the top spot (34.6 meters or 113 feet, six inches) with Wang second (30.9 meters or 101 feet, four inches) and Shittu third (25.84 meters or 84 feet, nine inches) Shittu was the top finisher in the discus (24.12 meters or 79 feet, 2 inches) with Cyrus Slavin second (21.46 meters or 70 feet, five inches) and Tiger Wang third (19.41 meters or 63 feet, eight inches). 

In the hammer, Slavin took the crown (24.30 meters or 79 feet, nine inches) with Shittu (21.18 meters or 69 feet, six inches) in second, Wang in third (17.02 meters or 55 feet, 10 inches), and Ezray in fourth (15.76 meters or 51 feet, eight inches). 

The Fords will now send a contingent of runners to the Penn Relays on Thursday, with distance action at Franklin Field beginning with the 1,500 meters at 6:35 p.m. -- Moreland is slated to represent the Fords in that event. Ryan Kredell will run at 8:30 p.m. in the collegiate 5,000 meters to wrap up the slate.
