Men's Track & Field Tunes Up For CC Championships with Dual Meet against Widener

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College men's track & field team competed in a dual meet against Widener on Monday at Johnson Track, its only home meet of the 2023 outdoor season. Haverford looked strong, showcasing the squad's depth as much of the Haverford squad was making its final preparations for the Centennial Conference Championships.

Peter LaRochelle led a large grouping of 1,500-meter runners in 4:05.03, ahead of Jakob Maiwald in second (4:07.87), Reed Solomon in third (4:09.04), Aaron Bratt (4:12.36) in fourth, and Williams Harris in fifth (4:20.74). Other runners notching top 10 finishes for Haverford included Joseph De Rosa (4:21.16), Tommaso Wheeler in seventh (4:30.12), Kieran McDonnell in eighth (4:43.03), Devin Abrams in ninth (4:52.04), and Xingyun Yang in 10th (4:52.96).

In the 800 meters, Matt Denton (1:55.23) posted a new personal best, edging out Reza Eshghi (1:57.65) while Micah Lachman finished third (1:58.17). Nico Tripeny (1:59.72), Michael Franco (2:00.52), Flyn Meadows (2:02.29), Sam Diaz (2:03.04), Miles Colescott (2:07.71) and Seawon Park (2:14.55) also all logged top 10 finishes for Haverford.

David Cole paced the 100-meter contingent, crossing in a personal-best 12.03 with Amon-Ra Kamit notching second place in 12.07, also a new personal best. Matthew Ruiz (12.67) and Boahen Kwakye (13.37) rounded out the Haverford contingent. 

Jonathan Hill (22.57) won the 200 meters with a personal best, outpacing Ravi Eaton (24.17). Jonah Hoffman-Weistman was the fifth-place finisher in 25.94, while Caesar Dai (25.95) and Kevin Villafane (26.67) also competed in the distance for the Fords. Dai was the 400-meter champion on Monday, with a time of 55.99, ahead of Leo Gordon (57.85) and Matthew Ruiz (1:01.63). 

In the long jump, Nathan Ma posted a third-place finish, clearing 5.66 meters (18 feet, 7 inches) while Leo Gordon was just behind, clearing 5.39 meters (17 feet, 8.25 inches). Kevin Villafane competed in the pole vault, posting a height of 2.75 meters (9 feet, 0.25 inches).

In the throwing disciplines, Cyrus Slavin impressed in the discus, posting a mark of 32.51 meters (106 feet, eight inches) for second place overall. Jonah Levine was third, tossing 25.78 meters (84 feet, 7 inches). Levine was second in the shot put, clearing 8.46 meters (27 feet, 9.25 inches) while Kamit was third with a toss of 7.99 meters (26 feet, 2.75 inches). 

The hammer toss saw Slavin finish second with a mark of 35.69 meters (117 feet, 1 inch) and Juan Miguel Pinto DIaz log a fourth place finish (29.8 meters or 97 feet, nine inches).

Tiger Wang, David Cole, and Slavin went 1-2-3 in the javelin, with Wang tossing 39.42 meters (129 feet, 4 inches), ahead of teammate Cole who tossed 31.44 meters (103 feet, 2 inches). Slavin rounded out a busy day with a toss of 30.37 meters (99 feet, 8 inches).

The Fords now return to action on Thursday as Jamie Moreland and Ryan Kredell will each compete in the Penn Relays on the first night of action at Franklin Field. Moreland's 1,500-meter run is slated to begin at 6 p.m. to kick off the Haverford slate.
