HAVERFORD, Pa. – After qualifying for the NCAA Championships for the 22nd straight season and winning the Centennial Conference crown for the 19th time in 22 years last year, the Haverford College men's cross country team will look to continue a successful stretch in the conference and on the national stage.

Senior Charlie Marquardt returns after winning the Mideast Region Runner of the Year and Centennial Conference Runner of the Year last season. He won the Mideast Regional and conference individual titles becoming the first Fords' runner to win back-to-back meets since Anders Hulleberg '11 in 2010.  Another top returner is junior Jimmy Gorman, who placed ninth in the conference meet and 247th in the national race. Senior Nicholas Gandolfo-Lucia (143rd) and junior Michael Brier (253rd) also return after racing in the NCAA Championships in 2014.

Head coach Tom Donnelly's squad was selected as the No. 1 team in the Centennial Conference coaches' preseason poll with five first-place votes and 61 voting points. Johns Hopkins, who placed second in the conference meet last season received four first-place votes and 60 points.

Haverford was also picked as the No. 23 team in the US Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association's preseason poll. The Fords were the second Centennial Conference team to make the poll as Johns Hopkins was No. 20. The conference was well-represented in the Mideast regional rankings as Johns Hopkins (No. 3), Haverford (No. 4) Dickinson (No. 5) and Swarthmore (No. 8) were among the top ten.

The Fords' season gets started with the Alumni Open tomorrow (Sept. 5) on the Alumni Cross Country Course. Haverford fans will have the opportunity to see the team two more times with the Main Line Invitational on Sept. 18 and Haverford Invitational on Oct. 23. The Centennial Conference Championships are Oct. 31 with the NCAA Mideast Regional taking place Nov. 14 and NCAA Championships on Nov. 21.
