Women’s cross country finishes 25th at NCAA championship

WAVERLY, Iowa – The 32nd-ranked Haverford College women's cross country team put forth an effort better than its national ranking indicated at Saturday's NCAA Division III Championship at the H. J. Max Championship Course of host Wartburg College. The Fords, who received an at-large bid to the meet, finished in 25th place of 32 teams and ahead of two teams that received automatic bids.

Emily Lipman led Haverford across the finish line and came within seconds of earning her second consecutive All-America honor. The top-35 receive the honor and Lipman came in 36th with a time of 22 minutes, 4.70 seconds, just 1.2 seconds behind the 35th place finisher.

Alice Vienneau was the second Ford to cross, taking 96th place (22:44.60). At last year's championship race Vienneau finished 205th. Erin Seglem (23:04.70; 140th), Harper Hubbeling (23:05.70; 146th) and Andrea Tocci (23:09.70; 155th) all finished within five seconds of each other to round out the scoring for Haverford. Like Vienneau, Hubbeling and Tocci made monumental improvements from the 2009 championship where they placed 206th and 218th, respectively.

Flora Berklein (23:15.80) and Emily Scott (23:51.90) placed 168th and 204th, respectively.

The Fords tallied 573 points and were one behind 24th place St. Olaf (Minn.) College. Middlebury (Vt.) claimed the team championship with 185 points. St. Lawrence (N.Y.) University's Wendy Pavlus was the individual champion with a time of 20:49.30.

Haverford has finished in the top-25 at the NCAA championship nine times in program history and for the first time since taking 24th in 2006.
