Women's cross country headed to nationals

HANOVER, Ind. - The Haverford College women's cross country team will participate in the NCAA Division III national championship meet for the fifth consecutive year as the Fords found out on Sunday that they were one of 16 at-large selections from across the nation.

The 16 at-large teams will join the 16 automatic qualifiers -- the top two teams at eight region championship meets -- at the national meet, hosted by Hanover College on Nov. 23.

Haverford placed fourth at the Mideast Regional on Saturday as sophomore Nora Weathers led the squad across the line in 21 minutes, 44 seconds to take ninth. It was the 13th time in the last 14 years that the Fords have placed in the top four at regionals. Weather's high finish assured her a spot in the field for the six-kilometer championship race but she will now have company.

Weathers, Kelley Riffenburgh (21st), Charlotte Lellman (26th) and Emily Scott (30th) earned all-region honors for their top-35 performances on Saturday at Lehigh University.

Registering the sixth top-15 finish in program history, Haverford placed 13th at the 2012 national meet.

This Saturday's championship race starts at 11 a.m., followed by the men's 8k race at 12:30 p.m.
