Season Review: Women's cross country shines at nationals

Signature highlights: Running as an at-large selection to the national field, the Fords proved they belonged as Haverford finished 17th at the 2013 Division III Cross Country Championship hosted by Hanover College on November 23. It was the second consecutive top-20 national finish for the Fords and seventh in program history. Senior Emily Scott paced the Haverford effort as she finished 54th in 22 minutes, 14. 8 seconds. Sophomore Nora Weathers also finished in the top 100 of the field of 280 runners with a time of 22:24.2.

The Fords also shined at the Centennial championship on November 2 as they placed second to eventual national champion Johns Hopkins. Scott finished fourth overall (22:57.5) to help Haverford finish in the runner-up spot in the highly competitive race that included three nationally ranked teams.

Season Notes:The Fords have now placed in the top three of the conference for 14 consecutive seasons … The Fords moved as high as 13th in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) national poll during the regular season … Haverford was the first Division III squad to finish the Brown Race of the 2013 Paul Short Run hosted by Lehigh University on October 5. The Fords finished third overall out of 45 teams as senior Emily Scott led the impressive effort with a time of 22:20 seconds … The Fords, with a fourth-place finish at regionals, finished in the top four at the Mideast Regional meet for the 13th time in the last 14 years … Scott, Nora Weathers, Charlotte Lellman and Kelley Riffenburgh earned all-region honors by finishing in the top 35 of the field of over 350 runners … Scott merited all-region accolades for the third straight year … Haverford was one of 16 at-large selections to the national field of 32 teams.

Looking Ahead:

The Fords demonstrated their depth in 2013 as a handful of runners stepped up over the course of the season to score points for Haverford. Expect more of the same in 2014 as the Fords will look to be a factor in the conference, region and nation once again with an experienced, talented roster that includes Nora Weathers, Charlotte Lellman, Kelley Riffenburgh, Maggie Heffernan, Clarice Bourland and Katie Balmer.
