Meet Preview: Women’s Cross Country heads to Centennial Conference Championship

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College Women's Cross Country team will head down to Westminster, Md. Saturday, looking to capture the illustrious Centennial Conference title. The 30th annual championship meet will be held on the McDaniel College Golf Course on the campus of McDaniel College.

The women's 6K championship race will start at 12 p.m. which will proceed the men's 8K championship meet that will take place at 11 a.m. Following the contests, an award ceremony will follow approximately around 12:45 p.m.

The women's meet features just one nationally-ranked squad in the top 35 in No. 9 Johns Hopkins. The Blue Jays have claimed the crown a record 14 times in a row, looking to repeat for the 15th time on October 28.

Haverford, will be running with three other Metro region foes in the race. Ursinus (No. 7 in the Metro), Swarthmore (No. 10 in the Metro), and Bryn Mawr are the three other schools that will be challenging for the Centennial Conference crown from that region.

All other schools that will be competing in the Centennial Conference Championships hail from the Mid-Atlantic Region.

The Fords have captured three Conference titles in their history, with 1996 being their last. The last NCAA Championship appearance for the Scarlet and Black was 2017, where they finished 25th.

At last season's CC Championships, Haverford finished in 9th place, and were led by first-team All-Centennial Conference member Katie Hirsche who placed seventh overall in the race.

First-year runner Alice Sappenfield will be making her Centennial Conference Championship debut Saturday, after an impressive first season. The San Francisco, Calif. product has placed first for the Fords in three of the four meets she has appeared in, most recently placing 61st in the Rowan Border Battle and achieving a new personal best time in 6k races (23:37.5).

Savannah Shaw will also be one to watch during the trek, as the sophomore finished first for the Scarlet and Black in the Main Line Invitational. The Downington, Pa. native also achieved a new personal best in 6k meets, securing a time of 24:30.6 at the NCAA DIII Pre-Nationals back on October 7. 

Following the Centennial Conference Championship meet, the Fords will head to the NCAA Metro Regional Championship on November 11. The women's race is slated to begin at 11 a.m. at DREAM Park in Logan Township, N.J. as the Scarlet and Black will vye for a spot for the NCAA Championships the following week.
