Squash teams host GW and Vassar

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverord College men's and women's squash teams welcomed nationally-ranked squads from Vassar College and George Washington Univerisity to the GIAC Saturday afternoon with the men earning a split against the visitors while the women dropped both of their matches.

The Haverford men (2-1) took down Vassar (0-1) thanks to the strength of the middle of the lineup. The Nos. 2-5 spots were all victorious. Alex Spiliotes Chris Tyson and Matt Liscovitz all won in straight sets while Zef Konst won in four. Zeek Barnett and Peter Boal won at the Nos. 7 and 9 positions to help the Fords.

Against George Washington (3-0), the Colonials took eight of the nine matches in straight sets. Tyson won his first set before falling to Mike Bower in the next three.

In women's action, the No. 31 Fords (0-2) dropped both matches by 9-0 counts.

Against 22nd-ranked Vassar, Caroline Nightingale at No. 1 and Kara Percival at No. 8 put up good battles against their foes. Nightingale lost 11-5, 11-4, 11-5 to Vassar's Kristine Bell, and Percival was defeated by Elizabeth Anderson by 11-7, 11-7, 12-10 scores.

Both teams head to Boston, Mass., next weekend for three matches each. The men play Boston College and Bryant College while the women take on Wellesley College and Boston College next Saturday. Both teams close out the trip at Northeastern University next Sunday at 11 a.m.
