Women's squash opens season doubling up Dragons

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Freshman Alex Love's victory at No. 7 clinched the win for Haverford College in a 6-3 season-opening women's squash victory Wednesday evening over visiting Drexel University.

The Fords (1-0) broke out to a quick 3-0 lead over the Dragons (0-1) as Kate Mundell, Zoe Becker and Alisa Strayer each rolled to 3-0 wins at the Nos. 4, 8 and 6 spots, respectively. Drexel battled back to even the score, however, winning at Nos. 2, 9 and 3.

Caroline Nightingale inched Haverford closer to the match victory with a sweeping three-game victory over Kiran Vasudevan at No. 1. Nightingale surrendered just seven points to Vasudevan in a win that gave the Fords a 4-3 edge.

Love pounded out an 11-4, 11-4, 11-2 win over Zeba Ahmed to garner the winning point. Co-captain Randee Johnson picked up the final point for Haverford in its win with a 3-1 triumph at No. 5.

The Fords will go more than a week before jumping into their next competition, a double-header in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., on Saturday, Nov. 5. Haverford opens with a 2 p.m. match-up against Smith College and follows with a 4 p.m. battle with host Vassar College.
