Women's squash overcomes Drexel

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Haverford College women's squash team traveled to Drexel University on Thursday night and finished off a season sweep of the 35th-ranked Dragons with a 6-3 victory.

The 32-ranked Fords (3-11) remained focused and composed despite several tight contests to register the win over Drexel (0-11).

Senior Roxanne Jaffe led an impressive performance by the Haverford women. Jaffe, playing at No. 6, took down Courtney Sabo in convincing fashion with scores of 11-6, 11-7, 11-4. Classmate Kira Jones, at No. 3, dropped the first two games of her match but dug deep in game three for a narrow 11-9 victory. Jones' persistence paid off as she continued to challenge Anna Schmiedicke on the backhand and clawed all the way back to win the entire match in five games.

Junior Zoe Becker at No. 7, demonstrated patience and a sound game plan to pull out a game five victory by a narrow 12-10 score to take the hard-fought match.

Sophomore Caroline Nightingale playing at No. 1, and Freshman Samara Flug playing at No. 8, each had strong showings as they persevered to earn wins in tough contests that went four games.

Freshman Alex Love, playing at No. 2, engaged in a battle with Davila Thompson. The contest was closely contested from start to finish as every game was decided by just two points. Love, un-deterred by dropping the first two games of the contest, persisted on the attack and grabbed the game five victory.

The Fords beat Drexel by an identical 6-3 score on Oct. 26 at the Gardener Integrated Athletic Center in Haverford's first match of the season.

Next up for Haverford is a Saturday 2 p.m. home match against the 30th-ranked Hoyas of Georgetown University.
