Fords cap CSA championship weekend with victory over Virginia

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Haverford College women's squash team capped off the weekend of College Squash Association (CSA) championship play with a 6-3 victory over the University of Virginia on Sunday in Epps Cup (D Division) consolation action at the Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center on the campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The 32nd-ranked Fords finished the season at 5-14 while the 31st-ranked Cavaliers dropped to 5-5. Caroline Nightingale at No. 1, Zoe Becker at No. 7, and Alisa Strayer at No. 8 all registered hard-fought victories in three games. Nightingale had to work overtime in game three but pulled out the 13-11 win.

Kira Jones, at No. 4, took game one, but suffered a heartbreaking 14-12 loss in a tight game two before bouncing back to claim 11-8, 11-4 victories in games three and four. Samara Flug also won in four games after shaking off a game-three setback.

The longest match of the day occurred at No. 6 as junior Randee Johnson survived a marathon five-game affair with Myriam Amarray. Johnson, undeterred by close losses in game two and three after winning game one, came back to edge Amarray in games four and five. Each of Johnson's wins came in overtime (15-13, 10-12, 7-11, 12-10, 15-13).

Roxanne Jaffe at No. 5, in her final collegiate competition, gave Elizabeth Rajasingh a battle but fell in four games.

Joining Jaffe on the final day of their collegiate careers were classmates Becker, Jones, and Kate Mundell.
