AMHERST, Mass. - The Haverford College women's squash team continued play on Saturday at the Pioneer Valley Invitational with a close 5-4 loss to Northeastern University and a pair of tough 9-0 losses to Wesleyan (Conn.) University and Wellesley College.

The Fords (1-5) began the day of action at Amherst College with a narrow loss to No. 36 Northeastern as Samara Flug, Sarah Madigan, Randee Johnson and Miriam Fuchs claimed wins (Details to follow when available). The squad then faced another challenge with a contest against 17th-ranked Wesleyan (10-3). Playing at No. 1, Caroline Nightingale registered a solid effort against Mary Foster despite falling in three games (11-7, 11-8, 11-8). Flug, at No. 6, also showed perseverance as she improved her point total in each game of her loss (11-2, 11-5, 11-6) to Danielle Craig.

Haverford, ranked 34th, had an opportunity to put lessons learned from the morning matches into action in the afternoon when it took on No. 25 Wellesley (3-10) at Mount Holyoke College. Bethany Simmonds, playing at No. 2, lost a five-game heartbreaker to Gabriella Wynne. After taking the first two games (11-2, 11-7), Simmonds looked to close out the match but Wynne edged Simmonds in the final three games (11-8, 11-7, 11-7) to claim the victory. Fuchs also made Kate Loftus work at No. 9 as she rallied to tie the match at 1-1 with a 12-10 win in game two before falling 3-1. Growing stronger during the course of her match at No. 1, Nightingale put up a fight (11-0, 11-8, 11-7) despite a 3-0 loss.

Haverford finishes out the weekend of top-notch competition on Sunday with a 9 a.m. match against No. 35 Smith College.
